H.E. Mr. Arindam Bagchi Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva

Ambassador Arindam Bagchi assumed charge as Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva on 20 January 2024.

Ambassador Bagchi has been a career diplomat for almost three decades. Prior to his current assignment, he served for nearly three years as the Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, and the head of the External Publicity and Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry, in New Delhi. In this capacity, he was the interface of the Ministry with the media, and also coordinated Government of India’s global outreach activities.

From 2020 to 2021, he headed the Northern Division of the Ministry, which deals with India’s relations with Nepal and Bhutan.

His previous overseas assignment was in Zagreb from 2018 to 2020 as Ambassador of India to Croatia. Prior to that, he was posted in Colombo from 2014 to 2018 as Deputy High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Bagchi worked as Director in the Prime Minister’s Office in New Delhi from 2010 to 2014, handling relations with the Americas and Russia, as well the United Nations and various global issues. He also handled work relating to the Departments of Atomic Energy and Space.

His earlier overseas assignments have been with the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York (looking after economic, development and environmental issues and efforts to reform the UN Security Council), and the Indian Embassies in Lima (Peru) and Madrid (Spain). In the Ministry in New Delhi, he has worked in Divisions dealing with the USA and Canada, as well as Administration and Human Resources.

Ambassador Bagchi pursued an undergraduate course in mathematics from Delhi University and a post-graduate course in management at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. His schooling has been in New Delhi and in Guwahati (Assam).

Ambassador Bagchi is married to Ananya Bagchi, and they have one son.
