Statement by India during the Information session for Member States on WHO transformation – Delivered by Ambassador Mr. Puneet Agrawal, Deputy Permanent Representative (Geneva, 4 April 2019)

We thank the Director General, the Senior Management and the Secretariat for organizing this information session for Member States.

2. The recent announcement following more than yearlong internal consultations and aimed at historically changing the very DNA of the organization through an overhaul of all major structures and processes is of utmost importance as well concern to us as Member States. Such a transformation will, in the least, impact Member States where action by WHO is to be taken to deliver results. Both in Geneva as well as at the regional committee level, we could have been been better informed if not consulted.

3. In the announcement, there were other major decisions which we learnt of. We would like to know more about it through the Governing body process for a better and fuller understanding.

4. The follow up steps of the transformation in the coming months should be undertaken in a transparent and inclusive manner with the full involvement of Member States

5. We take this opportunity to reaffirm India’s commitment to WHO and look forward to the Director General’s pragmatic and inclusive leadership and vision in guiding the organization in future.

Thank you.
