Statement by India under Agenda Item 2: Interactive Dialogue on the Annual Report of the High Commissioner delivered by Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, Permanent Representative of India, (Geneva 21stJune, 2021)
Madam President,
We thank the High Commissioner for presentation of the annual report and take note of the work done by her Office for promotion and protection of human rights. I had shared India’s perspectives on the Report during the consultations held earlier and I reiterate India’s support to the High Commissioner and her Office.
Democracy and freedom have been a part of India’s civilizational ethos. As the world’s largest democracy, India is committed to promotion and protection of human rights of its citizens, including through inclusive polity and society and sustainable development. We have undertaken targeted policy interventions to empower the vulnerable sections of our society in order to improve their access to education, housing, healthcare, social protection, sanitation, water supply etc. and to provide them good governance and opportunities for development.
Madam President,
In line with our commitment towards global promotion and protection of Human Rights, we have made a voluntary contribution of USD 400,000 to UN Trust Funds. We hope that this will ensure effective participation from SIDS and LDCs in the Council. I reiterate my delegation’s commitment towards constructive engagement with the Council, the High Commissioner, her Office and other HR mechanisms.
