Statement by India at the 28th Special Session of Human Rights Council: The deteriorating human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, delivered by Ambassador Rajiv K. Chander, Permanent Representative of India. [Geneva, 18 May 2018]

Mr. President,

1. India is deeply concerned at the continuing tensions on the border between Gaza strip and Israel, where more than 50 Palestinian nationals lost their lives and thousands were injured on 14 May 2018.

2. We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives. We urge all sides to avoid escalation of the situation so as to create a conducive atmosphere to resume the peace process.

Mr. President,

3. India remains firmly convinced that dialogue remains the only viable option that can effectively address the issues confronting the region and the people.

4. India believes that the solution to the Palestinian issue should be based on relevant UN Resolutions, Quartet Road Map and Arab Peace Initiative. India has been unwavering in its support for the Palestinian cause and hopes to see the realization of a sovereign, independent, united and viable Palestine, coexisting peacefully with Israel. India hopes for early resumption of peace talks between the Palestinian and Israeli sides in order to move towards finding a comprehensive solution on all final status issues.

Mr. President,

5. India once again calls upon all sides to exercise restraint, to stop the violence and the blood-shed and start a peaceful dialogue process for achieving a negotiated political solution.

Thank you Mr. President.
